Overall Goal:
The goal of the project is to have improved food security and increased income for women and men farmers in bari dominated farming systems of Nepal's mid hills.
Current Objectives:
The intended outcomes of the project are two-folds:
- Smallholders and disadvantaged groups adopt SSM practices linked with improved production technologies and seize new production opportunities and
- District extension services related to SSM respond to the needs of smallholders and disadvantaged groups
Approaches:
New approaches and technologies are identified by adaptive research implemented by competent research organizations and funded through a competitive research fund. The diffusion of appropriate technologies and approaches relies on the interaction between farmers groups, experienced leader farmers and through a farmer-to-farmer diffusion committee in the project districts. This process is supported by local partners including non governmental, governmental and community based organizations through competitive funding at the district level.
The programme targets smallholder farmers and disadvantaged groups with particular focus on poor women and poverty stricken social minorities in any of its command districts with a particular focus on remote VDCs. It provides capacity building at local level, and foster participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation. Annually special studies are implemented to increase the programme’s efficiency and outreach.
Results Achieved and Expected:
The third phase will specifically focus on four core areas:
- Explore possibilities of increasing basket of SSM options in particular women friendly labour saving technologies through applied research.
- Promote decentralized extension, institutional development and capacity building in the spirit of Local Self Governance Act (LSGA, 1999) at the district level in particular.
- Simplify and institutionalize competitive grant system (CGS) procedure and approaches as part of decentralized extension system and gradual implementation at the district level.
- Promote FtF diffusion approach establishing synergy with local institutions, other SDC projects and local level NGOs/CBOs and find out sustainable funding mechanisms locally.
Highlights:
The project has pioneered the concept of a competitive grant system (CGS) and farmers to farmers (FtF) approach for agriculture extension service delivery focused on sustainable soil management for livelihood improvement through increased productivity and income of marginalized hill farmers. The SSMP phase 2 has shown impacts at grassroots with its innovative, cost effective, pluralistic of GO/ NGO partnership approaches and methodologies.
