Swiss Programme in Nepal

SDC and its partners have strong technical, institutional and social competencies in areas such as rural infrastructure (rural roads, suspension bridges and irrigation sysems), natural resource management (forestry and agriculture), rural health promotion and vocational skills development, that are key to rural development and poverty alleviation. Inclusion of the Disadvantaged Groups (DAGs) into its programmes is one of SDC's main focus. SDC has established over the last five decades a solid foundation in the country that is directed towards programme implementation and capacity development at local level linked to policy improvement at national level. Close collaboration particularly with the Asian Development Bank in the area of rural infrastructure and vocational training ensures further outreach and coverage of the Swiss engagement in Nepal. In order to address the social conflicts which underlie the political (armed) conflicts and power struggle, SDC promotes equity and social inclusion, human rights and good governance throughout its programme. The psycho-social approach has been introduced to address the emotional effects of the armed conflict on individuals but also on the social fabric.

A comprehensive Conflict Sensitive Programme Management approach consisting of four complementary sets of instruments such as security management, coordination with other donor agencies, field presence, and close monitoring of the political and human rights situation in coordination with a political response, has proven to be effective during the period of armed conflict as well as during the present phase of peace promotion and state building. Strong linkages with citizens groups, user groups and community-based organizations as well as active engagement with all conflicting parties has given SDC the opportunity to act in and on the conflict at the local level, easing tensions and preparing the way for dialogue, conflict transformation as well as peace building.

SDC’s commitment in Nepal and tangible results have led to a broadly accepted, positive reputation and branding of Switzerland.
